work (merrill park) - ~*Crushed*Glass*~
work (merrill park)
this morning I was happily sleeping when the phone rang... I answered it and spoke, probably rather incoherently, to the woman on the other end... she asked me if I was available to come to work today at Merrill Park and when I told her it would probably be at least an hour she checked and said that it was fine... so I got up, got ready, and went. I had to put gas in my car on the way.... really regretted not doing that yesterday when it was still all nice out... oh well. you'd think that would teach me. but it probably won't.

so when I got there they sent me to one class, the teacher was there but she said she could use my help listening to the kids read. so til lunch time I sat on a little baby chair at a little table down the hall while little kids came and read little books to me. It's interesting how quickly you can make observations on their reading styles... there was one little girl who would try for a second to sound out the word, then sit there for a moment more, and just substitute some word. any word. usually having nothing to do with the text... thhen there was another girl who would just give up to begin with and tell me she didnt know the word... and still another little girl who would sound out the word, even if it took her a while, and most times ended up coming up with the right word...

during lunch I wasn't hungry yet so I went to the library and got online for a while, wrote a couple emails, talked on aim for a few minutes. then all too soon it was time to go back... I wasnt really sure where I'd be for the afternoon. I ended up in a special education (?) class. they seemed pretty normal though... the teacher had the same first name as me... so did one of the office ladies too actually. it was weird. I'm not used to such things...
so the teacher was nice and talked to me until the kids had come back from lunch... hey had their recess inside and then had rest time for about 20 minutes. they did Math sheets until 2 and played bingo until 2:25. Gym was from 2:30 until 3 and then they got ready to go home... I stayed in the classroom with the kids who rode the bus until it arrived and then that was it.
so not too bad at all.

went to see elf with Steve and Mark. it was um... amusing I suppose. not bad. and not as bad as it could have been... though my expectations weren't exactly high....

The way kids learn to read is one of my favourite things in education.

I find it interesting...I think I would quite enjoy it if I could just go around observing things all of the time... I mean not that I cant as it is... but there are many places that I can't just go as I please...
