forget me nots

trip to hospital for lungs August 2002

Lindsey~
I dont know if i had written to you that I caught a cold from Mikale and was started feeling icky friday... I'm thinking that i didnt so I'l start there :)
so friday i was all congested and sniffley and my nose was plugged and my ears were blocked and I just felt all full of mucus...
saturday I was worse and started actually getting some of the ickyness out of me.. and it was that really yucky mucus that usually means some sort of sinus infection...
Sunday I was feeling a lot better... still congested but not tired and sick feeling any more...
Monday stull sniffley but even better
then tuesday morning I woke up with my lungs all rattley... and this seems to happen every time i get sick and have my sinuses all icky.... my lungs get all mad and get all rattley and I have trouble breathing...
so through out the day I got steadily worse and by night I was really bad... and my back muscles were hurting from pulling in breath as hard as I was trying to get the air I needed... so my grandma and I decided that I probably ought to go to the emergency room even if I dont have the money to pay for something like that...
so we went and got there around 2 something...
well when i got there they had me in right away... I was amazed... I didn't expect them to be that quick at all...
when i walked in a lady asked can I help you and I was like yeah I hope so i guess i need to be seen... and she said ok come with me and they took me in the next room and she asked me questions while another guy took my blood pressure and my oxygen count and asked me about what my problem was...
then the guy took me to a room and I waited to be seen by someone...
that didnt take long either... a very nice nurse lady came in and took my blood pressure again and took my temperature and asked me questions... most of them I had already been asked by the first guy...
and then the doctor guy came in and he asked me the same questions and listened to my chest... everyone had done that too of course..
and he had me have a chest x-ray and a breathing treatment (which involved breathing a steroid in a mist form through this tube thing...)
and then after that I waited for a while and then he came in and listened to my chest again and recommended another treatment and said that my x-rays were clear... which meant no pneumonia which is good cause i hear that really sucks...
after the second treatment I waited again for him to come back and he listened to my chest again and had me do another treatment and had the breathing tretment guy check how hard my air flow is... they have yo blow in to this ting that tells you how hard it is... and I'm at about half what I should be now after being better enough to come home... I think normal for me should be somewhere close to like 500 and I was at probably less than 150 when i came in and closer to 250 when i left... so much better...
so then after that I waited for him again and asked im could I please go home... and he said that he couldnt force me to stay... but that he wouldnt give me his go ahead to leave... meaning I wouldnt be leaving with his blessing or anything...
oh yeah... you might want to know what it is thats my problem huh? well oretty much the same thing I already knew... just with more scientific ways to explain it now :)
pretty much when i get sick and then end up with a sinus infection (or just bad icky sinuses) my lungs get mad and revolt... they swell up pretty much the same way that asthma sufferers' do (and thtas another way to describe it... a sort of reactionary asthma...)
so he told me that yes I could go home caue he couldnt make me stay but that he recommended that I get admitted... and said that it can be very serious if it gets bad and that people have died from taht sort of thing...
and once he pulled out the "you could die" card... what was I supposed to say... no? so I stayed and let them admit me... and swaited for more than an hour to get taken up to my room...
while I waited I got a shot (a steroid to try to chill out my lungs) and some antibiotics. and then once my grandma knew what room I would be taken to she went home to feed her birds and I waited some more by myself... and during this time a girl came in to ask me all sorts of qestions for the form to admit me and the breathing treatment guy came back and did another treatment...
also before going up to my room the nice nurse lady came in and hooked me up to an IV (my bag of fluid that it was hooked to had steroids in it to further calm down my lungs...)(iv's really creep me out :p ) and then rode me up to my room in a wheelchair... which made me feel a bit ridiculous since i wasnt doing *that* badly :p
so finally i got to my room and they got me all situated... I was so sooo tired... and they kept coming in to do stuff to me... I had a breathing treatment and the nurses came in to tell me stuff about the bed and the hine and the tv and they put me on oxygen cause my oxygen count was (is?) too low... and I didnt like that either... cause I had to have it stuck up my nose and it just bugged me...
I took a couple little tiny naps in between them coming in for stuff but didnt really get to sleep til later...
around 9 something I called my granmda and talked to Mary and called down to get some food sent up and then called my friend Aaron to tell him where I was and that we probably wouldnt be able to get otgether today as planned and to have him send Francois (my host brother from canada who I've befriended and have been talking to on ICQ all the time... and i was talking to him last night when I went to the hospital and so he was worried about me) a message to tell him what was going on with me and not to worry if he didnt talk to me today cause originally they were going to keep me for at least today and maybe tonight too...
and then Aaron came and visited me... i was surprised too cause i woke him up whe i called but he was there before 10 I think... he got there right before my food did...
he left so i could nap and i slept for about a half hour and then the lady came in to do another breathing treatment and then I slept for about 4 hours and then Aaron came back and brought me flowers and didnt stay too long... he said he had something to do and would come back in a bit... so while he was gone I had another breathing treatment and talked to a doctor who said pretty much that I could go home... after he left I talked to Mary and then to my granmda and my granmda said that Aaron had been there to pick up the stuff that I was going to have my grandma bring to me when I thought i was going to have to stay there... like Bonnie and my toothbrush and a pair of sleep shorts cause all I had were my jeans and I was a little hot... but when Aaron got there I just asked him if hed be willing to take me to the one clinic where i needed to get my prescriptions filled and then I waited to get the prescriptions and be released... then we went to the clinic and I got my stuff.... more of my allergy meds, two different inhalers, prednizone ( steroid for my lungs), and an antibiotic... so I have ll kinds of stuff...
then he brought me home and I set up all my drugs and my flowers and set Bonnie next to them and took her picture... I really wished that i would have had my camera so that I could have taken pictures of her in my hospital bed :) most people think I'm strange for doing things like that... I dont care though :p
and so now here i am...
I'm tired... thinkin about goig to sleep soon here... cause i only got about 4 or 5 hours sleep at the hospital pretty broken up cause they kept coming in to do stuff to me...

just thought i would sahre my story...

once again hope things are going well for you and I hope to hear from you soon :)
